Idli is known to be the healthiest breakfast in the world. But, the challenge comes when you have to make this already nutri-packed dish even healthier. Well, with oats, you can do just that! Oats is a very healthy grain that is rich in fiber, vitamins, and minerals. It is great for weight watchers and heart health. Beta-glucan - a soluble type of fiber in Oats is known to reduce cholesterol levels. There are many healthy preparations of oats like idli, dosa, and cakes that I make that my family enjoys every time. I will be sharing the recipes of every one of those dishes, and more! In this post, I am sharing an Oats idli recipe with all the tips to get the softest and fluffiest oats idlis you will ever make. Do try it out and share your experience in the comments below.
1 cup Oats [Raw or Steel cut]
½ cup Rava [ Sooji rava / Upma rava]
1 cup curd
¼ cup water
½ tsp Mustard
1 tsp Chana dal
1 inch Ginger grated
4-5 Curry leaves chopped
4-5 Cashews chopped
½ tsp salt
Handful coriander leaves chopped
1 Carrot grated
7-8 cashews roasted
½ tsp baking soda
½ tbsp lemon juice
2 tsp oil
Blend the oats to a fine powder
In a pan, add 2 tsp oil. Warm it on low flame.
To this add mustard. When it splutters, add chana dal, and chopped cashews. Roast until dal is light brown.
Add grated ginger and chopped curry leaves. Roast for a minute.
Now, add the rava and oats
Roast until it is aromatic [about 5 mins ]
Transfer it to a bowl and let the mixture cool for about 5 mins.
Add grated carrot and coriander leaves. Add ¾ cup curd and mix.
And ¼ cup water. ½ tsp salt.
Now mix and beat it well for 5 mins. This step of beating is very important to get soft and fluffy idlis.
Cover and rest for 10 mins.
Rava & Oats both will absorb the water/moisture content and the mixture will thicken a little bit.
Now add ¼ cup curd. Add the baking soda and lemon juice and mix well. Make idlis immediately.
Grease the idli plates with ghee. Pour 1 small ladle in each. Steam for 10-12 minutes.
Soft and fluffy oats idlis are ready.
Enjoy with coconut peanut chutney.
