How to Make Tomato Paste

Updated: Nov 17, 2020

Making tomato paste at home is super easy and can be a very healthy replacement for store-bought tomato ketchup and hot sauce in many dishes. It can also be used in curries or soups.

This time I have used fresh homegrown tomatoes to make this paste.

How long can we store this paste?

This can be stored in an air-tight container in the refrigerator for up to a week. It can be frozen in an ice-tray and stored for up to 6 months.

Ingredients

  • 2lbs Tomatoes

Instructions

  • Wash the tomatoes well.

  • Chop them and grind to a fine purée

  • Run it through a sieve to separate out the seeds and lumps if any.

  • Now, In a pan, add this puree and let it boil on low to medium flame.

  • Keep stirring in between

  • The tomato puree will start to thicken and lose its water content.

  • Keep stirring and boiling until all the water content is removed and it’s thickened to a paste. This will take about 45 mins since it is a slow process on low to medium heat.

  • Once done, let it cool. If you intend to store it for a longer period, use an ice-tray to freeze it. If you plan on using the paste within 2-3 weeks, store it in an air-tight container and refrigerate.
